Kavala is situated in Northern Greece. In fact Kavala is second in ranking amongst the biggest cities of Greece. It is the primary seaport of the eastern part of Macedonia. Brief history - Kavala had been founded by people from Thassos during 6th century BC. It was earlier known as Neapolis new city. Kavala came under the Roman reign in 168 BC. The Apostle Paul made a landing at Kavala at the time of his earliest voyage to Europe.
During the Byzantine era, Kavala was known as Christoupolis and Morunets by the Greeks and the Bulgarians respectively. The Byzantine emperor Justinian tried to fortify the city during the 6th century as a protection from barbaric attacks. The Bulgarians made an attack during the period extending from 8th to the 9th century. The city had been burnt and captured during Norman raid (1185) in Macedonia.
Kavala witnessed plenty of growth and prosperity during the Ottoman reign between the periods extending from 1387 to 1912.
